Gambits
for piano
Program:
I love chess. I am also terrible at playing chess, but that is irrelevant! There are so many similarities in conception and strategic thinking between chess players and composers. Chess theory even uses musical terms in order to describe certain concepts, such as "transposition" and "tempo."
Gambits takes inspiration from chess by utilizing primarily two musical voices, one played by the left hand and one played by the right. Just as chess players both work together (in order to have an interesting match) and against one another (in order to win), these two musical voices act in both counterpoint and dissonance. At the start, the two voices are locked into each other with rapid arpeggios. They gain independence, form defences, and even perform sneak attacks on one another. The result is a work which hopefully captures both the beauty and aggression of this magnificent game!
